Sofía Peciña Medina
Spanish pianist Sofía Medina, born in Madrid in 1998, has built a diverse career as a concert soloist, chamber musician, and historical performer.
Demonstrating remarkable talent from an early age, Sofía began her musical education at just five years old. In 2007, she enrolled at the “Centro Integrado de Música Padre Antonio Soler” in Madrid, studying under Anatoli Pozvoun and Lydia Rendón.
After graduating with distinction from both her undergraduate and Master of Performance degrees at the Royal College of Music, she recently completed her Artist Diploma there, serving as the 2023-2024 Mill Williams Junior Fellow under the mentorship of Professor Dina Parakhina.
Throughout her career, Sofía has garnered numerous accolades, including multiple honors and distinctions, as well as various prizes in competitions. Notably, she received the prestigious "Juventudes Musicales de Madrid" award, presented by Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain at the National Auditorium in 2019.
In 2023, she achieved significant success in various national and international competitions, including the Help Musicians Award (March), first prize at the Don Benito National Piano Competition (April), first prize at the “Kendal Taylor Beethoven Competition at RCM” (May), and both first prizes at the Budapest Danubia Talents International Piano Competition and the Duo Competition (November).
As a soloist, Sofía has performed extensively across Spain in venues such as Segovia, Ávila, Guadalajara, Valladolid, Burgos, Córdoba, Jaén, Granada, Málaga, and Madrid. Her international performances have taken her to countries including Russia, Italy, Portugal, Amsterdam, and London, where she has graced prestigious venues like Steinway Hall, Saint James’s Piccadilly, and Cadogan Hall.
Sofía has also performed concertos, including Schumann's with the JOL Orchestra in 2021 and with the CIM Orchestra in 2016. Recently, she played with the OSCYL orchestra in Burgos in 2024.
She has participated in masterclasses with renowned professors such as Dmitri Alexeev, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Vladimir Tropp, Galina Eguiazarova, Boris Berman, Cédric Tiberghien,Charles Owen, Denis Lossev, Tillman Krämer, Norma Fisher, Wei-Yin Yang,Yejin Gil, Péter Nagy, Collin Stone, Ian Jones, Miguel Ituarte, Joaquín Soriano, and Bruno Aprea.
A passionate chamber musician, Sofía collaborates in various ensembles, including violin, viola, and cello duos, as well as piano trios, quartets, and quintets. Her chamber music engagements have led her to festivals and projects like the RCM Chamber Music Festival, Lucca Belcanto Festival, Watford Piano Trio Festival, and Bardonecchia Music Festival.
Her chamber music masterclasses have included instruction from Mark Messenger, Danny Driver, Marc Danel, Mari Tampere, Lars Anders Tomter, Nathan Braude,Thomas Zehetmair, Ruth Killius, Yuri Zhislin, Giuseppe Mancini, Antonello Farulli, Trio Debussy, Barbican trio, Marc Danel, Alexander Chaushian, Denis Brott, James Kirby and Michael Bochmann.
Sofía’s interest in historical performance has driven her to study harpsichord with Professor Robert Woolley and participate in fortepiano seminars with Geoffrey Govier. She has performed in various masterclasses and festivals and was recently invited to showcase new clavichords at the “Broadwood” exhibition. Her harpsichord masterclass instructors include Jean Rondeau, Claudio Astronio, Carole Cerasi and Kathryn Cok. Additionally, she has played basso continuo in Mozart symphonies and Bach cantatas in chamber ensemble projects.
As a dedicated and experienced educator, Sofía has been teaching privately for “Piano and Strings Tutors London” since 2022. She has a strong passion for nurturing young talent and fostering a love for music in her students. Through her personalized teaching approach, she tailors lessons to meet each student's individual needs, helping them develop their technical skills and musical expression.
Through her role as a tutor, Sofía is shaping the next generation of musicians, instilling in them the same passion and dedication that has fuelled her own musical journey.
